Santorini, Thera or Strongyli

(as it was called before) is the island located at the southernmost part of the Cyclades, Aegean Sea, south of Ios and west of Anafi. Renown for being a second home to the thriving Minoan civilisation (amongst others...), a land of turmoil due to its numerous volcanic incidents and a unique place of diverse and striking natural beauty, today it’s one of the most famous tourist destinations in the world.

Santorini as well as the islands of Therassia and Aspronissi are remnants of the volcanic eruption that took place at Strongyli, merely a volcanic cone. Its central part got blasted away along with the volcano crater following the infamous Minoan eruption in 1613 BC. and resulted in the creation of what we now call the Caldera of Santorini and the destruction of the island’s prehistoric civilisation.

The land between Thera and Therassia submerged, up to a depth of 1.500 metres.
